The Theory Test must be Passed before the Practical Test can be taken. The Theory Test is the same for Automatic Cars or Manual Cars even if you Learn to Drive in an Automatic car or you choose a Manual Driving Instructor. Once you have Passed it, you will get a Certificate which is valid for 2 years, were within those two years you will try to pass your practical test.
To learn for the Theory you will need to read the highway code book and also to practice the questions and answers book or app that you can purchase on the internet
Also you will need to buy a cd rom or again an app from the app store to practice the Hazard Perception tests.

There are two parts for the Theory:
Part one: Multiple Choice Questions
In this part you will have to give the correct answer from a choice of 3-4 answers, some questions may need more than one correct answer. You must answer correctly at least 43 out of 50 questions to be able to pass this section

Part two: Hazard Perception
In this part there are 14 video clips with different road situations. In each video clip there will be at least one developing hazard which you will score according to your ability to identify as quickly as possible that hazard, the quicker the higher the score will be.
Some clips have more than one devloping hazard but only on one of then you will be scored. You must score at least 44 out of 75 to be able to pass this part. Over all you must be able to pass both parts at the same time to get your certificate.
